How To Set Boundaries With Social Media

Published on February 26, 2019October 1, 2020 by Lauren

Below are a few ways I’ve tried to set boundaries with social media use. So far, I feel like they’re working.

Meet Lauren

Hey, I’m Lauren! I’ve decided to take a trial & error approach to self-help. So far I’ve learned that leggings are pants, if you can’t laugh you’ll cry, and no one really knows what the hell they’re doing…least of all, me. I’m a mom, stepmom, furmom and wife. When I’m not momming, I’m writing. Thanks so much for being here!

“The truth is, what we’re doing is filtering our realities. Each of us is doing this. We are taking our real lives and presenting them online with a veil of perfection. Because why not? I’d much rather show a picture of me smiling on vacation than me crying in the shower because I’m PMS-ing. Both are equally real parts of my life. But one I’m excited to share with the world, while the other I’d prefer keeping to myself (plus no one really wants to see that.) The thing to remember is that behind each of those veils of perfection is real life. Each of us has our own multifaceted, confusing, thrilling, happy, exhausting, miserable, beautiful REAL life. With crying babies and messy kitchens and boring weekends and cellulite. ⁣
⁣
So, how then do we navigate this online landscape and show up to do our work without constantly getting derailed by the comparison game? How do we use the internet and social media while taking full advantage of all their resources in order to reach the people who need us? How do we create content that works online without falling into the trap of manipulating our actual realities in an attempt to look like what we’re seeing works online? ⁣
⁣
We need to separate the reality we share online from the reality we live offline. And the best way I’ve learned to do this is by setting boundaries, or mental reminders, to keep myself from falling down the rabbit hole that is the online comparison game.”⁣

Today’s podcast episode with @adrienneneufeld is Today’s podcast episode with @adrienneneufeld is a must-listen. I hope you leave today's conversation with the insight that you don't need a specific goal to work toward in order to feel worthy. You are worthy right now, wherever you are, whatever you're doing or not doing. Let our goal be this: to be open to opportunities. Invite them into our lives and be willing to accept them when they arrive. And in the meantime, let's keep our eyes open for those moments of lightness and fun that spring up around us every day 🌈 #findthejoy #readytoreceive #podcastsforwomen #podcastsformoms #mentalhealthmatters

I used to spend all of my time climbing the stairs I used to spend all of my time climbing the stairs.⁣
Step after step,⁣
getting back to the top,⁣
back to a place where I could feel stable.⁣
But as soon as I'd get there,⁣
life would be waiting⁣
with a swift kick,⁣
sending me tumbling back down.⁣
I spent all of my days⁣
climbing and tumbling,⁣
climbing and tumbling.⁣
Not anymore.⁣
Now I stay at the top.⁣
I don't spend my energy climbing.⁣
Instead, ⁣
I spend my energy holding onto the banisters,⁣
gripping them tight,⁣
holding on for my life,⁣
waiting for that kick.⁣
And when it comes,⁣
I'm ready.⁣
And I can take it.⁣
It'll take me a moment to compose myself afterwards.
But when I do⁣,
I'm right where I was.⁣
At the top. ⁣

"I worry we’re so preoccupied watching everyone else’s lives that we might miss our chance at doing the important work of living our own. You see, we are all plagued with chronic busyness. It’s an adverse side effect to the delusion we have that everyone else is doing more than we are. We’re all trying to keep up with everyone else’s highlight reel, stuck in a sick feedback loop that never ends. And we don’t compare our own situation to everyone else’s individual situations. Instead, we compare our own situation to everyone else’s situation, collectively. As a whole. And our individual efforts stand no chance against what everyone else is doing, all together. Sure, we just got a new job, but she’s traveling the world and he just got married and they just had a baby. We’re not doing any of those things! So in order to feel like we are a part of it, we wave our busy flag and join the fight so we can keep up with all the other busy bees. ⁣
⁣
But while we’re all busy being busy, life is passing us by.” 🐝 #podcasts #amwriting #highlightreel #instagramvsreality #mentalhealthpodcast
When I enter the forest for my morning walk, I fee When I enter the forest for my morning walk, I feel deflated. I have to force myself to get out of the car. My energy is low. I’m tired. Sad. Drained. Then I drag my feet to the first clearing and I look up...and I’m home. I’m brought back to life. I sit in this same spot every morning and just pause. I listen to the sounds. I watch the trees. I bathe in the energy of the forest. And I’m reborn. Every morning, I’m reborn. I’m reminded who I am. And I just want to hug the trees and say thank you. Thank you, thank you for bringing me back to life. Thank you for reminding me. ⁣
⁣
This may sound a little crunchy granola, but I don’t care. Nature is healing. It’s my medicine. And by the time I finish my walk and exit out the other side, it feels like someone just gave me CPR. It’s when I take my first real breath of the day. Thank you, pachamama 🌏🌲 #forestbathing #morningwalk #pachamama #natureheals #mentalhealth
